9 week picture skip and NT scan

Well Im slacking and completely missed posting my 9 week picture. I actually did take one but then my camera quit working so its stuck on my picture card until I can retrieve it. So I suppose my blog will have to do without my belly for one week. I think that means that this week, we will see a bit of a difference because I dont know if its bloat or baby (it cant be babies yet, right?!) but something is going on down there. I also had an u/s on Friday and it went GREAT. Baby B was measuring just two days behind Baby A and the u/s tech was happy with that. I got to hear both of their h/b's and saw them moving their little arm and leg buds, it was amazing!

I was also hoping that some of my blog readers would be willing to comment about the NT scan and why they got or did not get it. I completely understand that the decision to get the scan is up to Dan and I (and my OB) but I am just looking for any personal opinions or feedback. Thank you in advance!

Finally, I wanted to give a special shout out to all my blog readers that are still TTC. I cant tell you how often I think of you girls and read your blogs to find out your updates. You each have a special place in my prayer journal and I am thinking of you often!

“This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, Love to complete your life.”

Hey Shannon! My OB recommended that we get the NT scan and asked us if we wanted it, I looked at DH and he said right away that he wanted it done. I selfishly wanted it because you get an u/s with it and I wanted to see my baby on the monitor to make sure everything was ok. GL with your decision!

We decided not to do the NT scan. We knew that they would screen for the same things during second tri and we didn't want the pressure of having to decide about an amnio if something came back elevated. I was terrified of doing an amnio after having dealt with a previous loss. It seemed that if we weren't willing to take that next step, it didn't make sense for us. We finally decided after asking ourselves this question: "What will we gain by doing the scan?" The reasons just weren't compelling enough for us. Of course, everyone feels differently and we might make a different decision in a future pregnancy.

DH and I talked about it for a long time before deciding not to do it, though. Information is good, but too much can make one crazy (especially if that someone is me and there are lots of false "positive" results). I just felt like I needed to trust that God was taking care of our little one and be content with hearing the heartbeat (which is amazing) until the 18 week u/s. My OB didn't really have an opinion about it, just presented it as an option.

Good luck with your decision. Sorry for the epistle!

I have been wondering about you. Did you have an u/s last week? I wasn't sure if you did or not but I kept checking for updates.

My OB didn't give me a choice to have the NT scan, he basically said your having it done. If he had given me the choice, I still would of done it anyways. I like knowing that everything is okay with my son and even if something did come back abnormal, honestly, I would leave it up to God. I think they only check for down syndrome right? I think some Ob's also ask you if you want the follow up b/w that goes a long with the NT scan, again mine didn't give me a choice with either the scan or the b/w. I had everything done. When I had my level 2 u/s and I met with the genetic counselor, she talked about amnio if something came back abnormal, and at that point I said, you know it's all in God's hand the health of this little guy. I'm sure you can see with the pros and cons of getting it are and than you and Dan can decide what you would like to do. GL with your decision!!! If you want any more opinions you can ask us.

I've been waiting for you to update and have been praying that everything was ok. Glad to hear it is! Thanks for thinking of the TTC girls. It means a lot!

I got the NT scan for a few reasons. One was because the only other u/s I would have was at 20 weeks, and I don't think I could have waited that long! I also wanted to see if everything was okay. It was covered by my insurance so I didn't even really think about it. It was really an amazing experience for me. The tech I had was awesome and the pictures were so clear.
GL on your decision!

Congrats on 9 weeks - can't wait to see the bump!

We did not get the NT scan - in fact, it wasn't even brought up by my doctor. We discovered at our 20 week u/s that our son had the echogenic bowel, which lead to CF testing for me and DH, which now leads us to having our son tested for CF at birth, but we would never have terminated if we had found anything like downs or CF earlier than 20 weeks anyway. We would have been (and still are) prepared for whatever God gives us with our little boy.

At any rate, it's a chance to see your little miracle on the big screen, but just be sure your insurance provider covers it first.

Good luck!!

Hey Shan! I asked my Dr about the NT scan and she was surprised since she usually only brings it up with older moms. I wanted to get it because it was a chance to see the baby. If we had not done the NT we would not have seen the baby again until 21 weeks for the big u/s. I also like the peace of mind. Regardless of what anyone would do with the results- for me, preparation for an issue with the baby would be key. I would rather know ahead and be prepared if our child had one of the disorders tested for. Did they tell you how many u/s'? you would get with a twin pg?.
good luck!

we only had a growth u/s at 20 weeks then again at 28 because of my uterine septum. since i didn't have one i can't tell what i've missed out on, but in our case it wasn't necessary. in your case (with twins) i'd probably do it, though. gl!

We did not have the scan. We knew with twins we'd get plenty of u/s so we didn't need it for that reason. We knew the scan wouldn't make a difference because there was only one option for us, to love these babies no matter what. It's all in God's hands and that gave us peace. We just saw no reason for it. Good luck with your decision!

Hi Shannon! Just weighing in on the NT scan: We decided to do the NT scan because we wanted to be as informed as possible about our little one's status. If something was found on the scan, we would not have terminated the pregnancy, but we would have at least had time to research and prepare ourselves for what was to come. I just didn't want to find myself in a position of giving birth not knowing that something was wrong, should that be the case, and then having to try and research and understand everything while dealing with a newborn and crazy hormonal emotions. Good luck making the decision, I know there are pros and cons for everything. Glad to hear everything went well at your u/s, too! Can't wait for the next belly pictures!

We did the NT scan not because it would have changed anything but because we wanted to see the baby again and we figured that if there was anything wrong with the baby we'd have more time to prepare. It's a really personal choice and I'm sure you'll make the one that's right for you and Dan.

I don't think I've been presented with that option yet and I'm not sure I would do it. Good luck with your choice. And my dear, you are probably showing with those beautiful babies! That's awesome.

Shannon, i was checking in the last few days to see your update. i always look forward to seeing what's happening. We will have to get together this summer, i can't wait to see you. Honestly, i don't even know what an NT scan is. i haven't heard of it and didn't have it done. I only had the one big ultrasound when we found out the sex. It drove me crazy not having any more but it worked out fine except for the fact that the dr. didn't know Parker was upside down?? duh! I told him that all along. I'm sure they have to monitor you more since you're having twins. Let me know what you decide. i'm so curious to hear everything that's going on with your pregnancy. i'm still so excited.

Hey Shannon, we decided not to do the NT scan. I didn't like how high the false positives were and most likely we wouldn't have gotten an amnio anyway.

At the 20wk u/s they checked for all the markers that are done at the NT scan. There ended up being a soft marker for downs syndrome and we were sent to a specialist. Everything came back great with the u/s we had with the specialist and as you know we have a healthy little boy.

So even though we didn't have the NT we still would've found out if there was a problem and could've done research on the condition.

I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said. GL with your decision, I'm sure you and dan will make the right decision for you all.

We choose to do the NT scan. But really? I wanted the ultrasound - and I'm SO glad we did it. They looked like babies and it was just amazing. It's very thorough too, which was nice.

It's also non-invasive (b/w and u/s) so we decided we were fine with that and wouldn't pursue any further testing after that point - nor would we terminate the pregnancies, etc.

We were fortunate and got great results back for the tests, which is reassuring. But had they not been so great, we would have at least had some time to prepare.

Another reason that we did it (and this would be different for you) is that the results would be very similar if we were to use our embryo's in the future (the frozen ones, since so much is based on the woman's age at the time of conception).

Good luck in your decision.

We decided not to get the NT Scan because it wasn't covered by insurance sould would have cost ~$350 (and this was in December when we were also buying Christmas gifts). We thought about it for a while, but then figured regardless of the results we wouldn't do anything differently as far as the baby was concerned, so really it was just another opportunity to see the baby (and thus, not worth spending the extra money since my doc did an 11w u/s so we'd seen her recently). GL!

We did not do the NT scan. Later on down the road there are more options for tests to look for DS. We would not terminate the PG if we found out the baby had DS and we decided it was not worth it for us.

Plus we are low risk. I also heard some of the % of accuracy and they were not compelling enough for us at this stage.

We had to go through some genetic testing before IVF so we already know we are no CF carriers.

I understand people wanting to see the baby and get a u/s. For us with IVF, we are getting a lot of u/s so that was not reason enough for us.

GL.

we did the nt scan for two reasons: one, we wanted to know if something was wrong so we could start educating ourselves right away and get the best doctors on baord. two, we wanted the chance to see the little bugger! nothing would have changed if our results came back showing potential issues, but since there was no harm to the baby involved, we figured why not have the info? gl with your decision!
